Pocket Barometer CP1314 Performance Chart

A very fine early cased aneroid pocket barometer altimeter and thermometer with rare numbered Singer’s Patent compass No 2588 c1863


 Pocket barometer having 1⅞” silvered and die struck dial, outer bezel driven altimetric scale calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 8,000ft divided down to 50ft, the inner with standard meteorological terms, barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 23” – 31” divided down to 1/10th. Blued steel pointer, bevelled glass. The standard configuration movement driven from a single 1” capsule tensioned on a C spring.

The Singer’s Patent compass comprising ⅞” diameter mother of pearl dry card with cardinals and intercardinals, numbered “2588,” bevelled glass with compass lock, centred within a full width semi-circular thermometer having silvered register calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit with a range from 0° – 130° divided to 1°. Calibration port.

The whole mounted within a lacquered brass drum form case, engine turned and belled finishers, pendant and bow.

Presented in its original two tier oxblood leather over timber dark blue velvet and cream silk lined case, snap closures on button releases.

Condition: The barometer the subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement with good accuracy across the standard barometric scale 28” – 31 inches Hg”.

In all respects very close to new condition, the barometer dial about perfect. The compass swinging freely and easily finding north, the lock working correctly. The thermometer with unbroken thread reading accurately to within 1°. The brass case retaining virtually all its original lacquered finish. The leather case with virtually all its near unhandled gloss finish. The fabric interior about perfect.

Comments: This instrument has it all – it’s early, has a rare Singer’s Patent numbered compass, and presents in fine condition with all aspects working well and correctly. Probably not beatable.
