Pocket Barometer Altimeter & Compass Travelling Compendium by Negretti & Zambra c1909 – SOLD
Pocket barometer compendium, the gilt brass barometer altimeter having finely engraved 1¾” silvered dial, the upper portion marked with standard meteorological terms “Rain,” “Change” and “Fair,” and “Compensated,” the lower signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London” with “NZ” logogram.
The outer rotating altitude scale having a range from 0–10,000ft, the inner scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 21–31. Blued steel pointer set beneath a fine bevelled glass. The fine quality lacquered brass 1¼” capsule driven movement of conventional pattern with off-set cock, the primary lever inscribed with the date “9/09” with bimetallic compensation to extension. Drum form case with central rib, suspension ring with pillar, compensation port to verso.
The matching gilt brass compass having Singers pattern mother of pearl floating card marked with cardinals and intercardinals, jewelled suspension, the lower part signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London.” Suspension ring set to post with integral compass lock.
The whole pocket barometer compendium contained within its original oxblood moroccan leather over wood green velvet and silk lined case, marked with initials “G. K.” with the letter “D” impressed over the top of the G, so “D. K.” The lid silk with the maker’s cartouche in gold block, snap closure on a button release.
Both instruments have been cleaned and serviced and retain a substantial amount of original finish. The barometer has good sensitivity and function, the compass finds north easily, and both are undamaged. The case shows external signs of age with discoloration to the leather over the lid, some minor abrasions and general wear. It is sound, closes properly, and has good shape and colour.
These pocket barometer compendia are rare, and an example by Negretti and Zambra in this condition is extremely hard to find. Of the surviving few, many have been left open with the interiors exposed to sunlight with resulting bleaching and deterioration of the silk and velvet. This example retains the vibrancy and original colour almost as manufactured. Very much a collector’s item.
