Nickel Brass Pocket Barometer Altimeter Thermometer Compass Compendium c1870 – SOLD

Image of Nickel Brass Pocket Barometer Compendium c1870Pocket barometer compendium with engraved and silvered 1¾” dial, the upper portion marked with standard meteorological terms “Rain,” “Change” and “Fair,” and “Compensated,” outer rotating altitude ring having a scale in feet set from 0–8,000ft, barometric altitude scale set to inches of mercury with a range from 23–31, fine blued steel pointer.

Conventional pattern single 1¼” capsule driven lacquered brass movement with bi-metallic compensation to primary lever extension. Three piece barrel form case having suspension ring. The verso with circular early pattern long-reservoir thermometer set to a  decorated and silvered register having barometer compensation screw port at 6 o’clock and Fahrenheit’s and Celsius scales from 15–130 degrees and -10–55 degrees respectively. Singer’s patent compass with floating mother of pearl card marked with cardinals and intercardinals, compass lock.

The whole contained within its original oxblood moroccan leather over wood green silk and velvet lined double case. Snap closure on twin button release.

These instruments are quite scarce – however, this is a particularly unusual pocket barometer compendium in terms of its construction. The case is manufactured in three distinct and substantial parts, the thermometer register as an additional separate component. Though the dial remains unsigned, this is a good quality item and the movement bears similarities with those of Thomas Armstrong.

The barometer altimeter with good sensitivity and progression, working well, the thermometer with unbroken mercury thread, the compass swings freely, easily finding north. Nickel plate to the case with some wear, the leather case with losses and abrasions – the closure buttons and clip replaced, leather repair to area of release buttons, and lids re-lined.

It is almost impossible to find these instruments with the early-pattern long-reservoir thermometer unbroken. Completely stripped and serviced, this is a most unusual and very attractive item.
