Bourdon & Richard barometer-clock with 5½” dual concentric enamelled dial, the outer barometric dial with a range from 28 to 31 inches of mercury, annotated “Stormy,”  “Much Rain,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” “Set Fair,” “Very Dry.” The dial bottom bearing the legend “Metallic Barometer” and twin medallions: to the left, “World Medal Exhibition 1849, E.Bourdon and Richard’s Patent Paris,” to the right “Universal Exhibition London 1851, Council Medal.”

The clock dial with roman chapter ring having divisions for minutes, Breguet-style clock hands, correct and original barometer pointer highlighted in red enamel with gilt border, blued-steel tell tale. Port with winding square set beneath a swing-open bezel with heavy bevelled glass. The barometer with ‘horse shoe’ capsule, rack and pinion, provision for adjustment/compensation. Good quality 8-day clock movement with compensated platform escapement, the back plate struck with serial no. “210.”

Heavy drum-pattern brass case, retaining much original lacquer finish. Turned pillar with substantial hanging loop. Rear with heavy bevelled glass.

The whole contained within its tooled black Moroccan leather-covered and blue velvet-lined original travelling case having gilt brass furniture comprising twin turnbuckle catches and swinging transport handle. Removable lower lining with stowage for keys below.

With only approximately 500 of these so called ‘baromètre-pendule‘ (pendulum barometers) produced, according to Félix Richard’s widow, the number of these instruments surviving in complete and essentially untouched “as found” condition are very few indeed. When they occasionally arise the travelling cases are almost always missing or in relic condition.
