A scarce, high quality, 1¾” diameter gilt brass hand bearing compass by the highly respected instrument maker C.H. Chadburn & Son, enamelled card with maker’s legend and “71 Lord Street, Liverpool,” applied black cardinal, half and false points. Polished flat steel bar needle with jewelled suspension, highly-polished reflector ring, bevelled convex crystal. Transit button to stem with circular bow. Contained within its original, green velvet-lined, moroccan leather-covered case with gilt brass keeper.

The glass removed and cleaned, this most attractive compass remains in completely original condition. The gilding and crystal with very light abrasions, the leather case modestly worn retaining a good proportion of original finish. Crisp overall.

Charles Henry Chadburn & Son is recorded in Banfield, Edwin, Barometer Makers and Retailers, 1660-1900 as working at 71 Lord Street, Liverpool from 1857-1875. Its sister company, Chadburn Brothers, was instrument maker to Prince Albert, and Chadburn & Son became pioneers of the marine telegraph system.
