A very good cased lacquered brass Aneroid Barometer No 471 by William Callaghan for Moritz Pillischer c1863


Aneroid barometer having 4¼” silvered and engraved dial with barometric range from 26 – 31 inches of mercury divided down to 1/50”, blued steel pointer, deep reflector ring and gilt skeleton index.

Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 2¾” nickel alloy capsule tensioned on a coil spring, the cock struck with no. “471,” the movement further inscribed with date of manufacture “3.7.63.” All contained within a lacquered brass drum form case, pendant and bow, the verso with calibration port.

Presented in its correct blue velvet lined hardwood case, snap closure on a button release.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement showing high levels of accuracy easily acceptable for domestic purposes.

The dial crisp and clean, the brass case with a high proportion of lacquered finish, minor marks and abrasions. The timber case structurally sound, the lower back with some splitting. The fabric interior with some losses and discolouration.

Comments: A very good attractive instrument and an early example from this most respected maker and retailer. Perfect for daily observation or a collector or connoisseur’s piece alike.
