A very scarce Georgian pocket sundial compass pocket sundial compass in turned case c1780

Late 18th century pocket sundial compass having 1¾” floating paper card, hand drawn with cardinal, intercardinals and false points to outer edge, fleur-de-lys for north, sun face indicating south, and the hours for the northern hemisphere to inner part. Simple brass gnomon and gemstone pivot to centre. Verso with magnetic bar set to magnetic north 22°, balanced with sealing wax.

Separate finely engraved brass slip-over cover detailing the hours for both the northern and southern hemispheres.

Contained within a polished turned hardwood, possibly coromandel, case with screw-on lid, the inner lid with paper label displaying instructions for use at different times of the year, the lower bowl numbered “14” in pencil.

Condition: The floating card with some ageing, the compass swinging freely and finding north easily. The brass slip-over cover with marks and patina consistent with age and use. The turned wood case with split to lid due to age shrinkage, otherwise sound. The calendar with losses and aging, and may have been added in the early 19th century.

Comments: A very unusual and early pocket sundial compass, the alignment to magnetic north allowing it to be accurately dated. Its beautifully hand-drawn dial and the addition of the brass cover allowing it to be used both in the northern and southern hemispheres make this piece particularly desirable.
