A good Victorian 11” rope twist aneroid wall barometer by Onorato Comitti & Son c1880
Large wall barometer having 8” hand illuminated vitreous glass dial, standard meteorological terms, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 25” – 31” and divided down to 1/20”. Basic weather prognostications and decorated centre, manufacturer O Comitti & Son logogram to bottom. Blued steel pointer, bright polished and lacquered index. Bevelled glass.
Standard Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 2” capsule tensioned on a C spring. The whole presented in a carved oak frame with rope twist border, calibration port and hanging plate to verso.
Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working well and well within expectations of these earlier instruments, sensitive with good progression and surprisingly accurate across the standard range.
Near perfect dial. The glass intact, the bezel retaining a good proportion of its original lacquered finish. The timber case with good colour, some minor wear and ageing.
Comments: A very good and beautifully decorated example of an earlier aneroid barometer which once upon a time would have featured in most affluent households.
