A good scarce aneroid pocket barometer, Singer’s Patent compass and thermometer travel compendium retailed by J.J. Wainwright, Birmingham, c1875

Pocket barometer with 1¾” silvered die-struck dial, outer altitude scale calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 8,000ft divided to 50ft and operated from rotating bezel. Inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of Mercury with a range from 23” – 31” and divided down to 1/20th”. The upper part with standard meteorological terms and retailer’s name, “J.J. Wainwright & Co,” the lower “Birmingham” and “Compensated.” Blued steel pointer, heavy bevelled glass. The standard configuration movement driven from a single 1” capsule tensioned on a C spring, all contained within ribbed semi-barrel form case, extension post, suspension ring, calibration port to verso.

The compass with dry mother of pearl card, jewelled suspension, marked “Singer’s Patent,” with cardinal and intercardinal points, integral compass lock with extension post, suspension ring, ribbed semi-barrel form case.

The thermometer set on an ivory register calibrated in degree Fahrenheit and Celsius with ranges 0° – 130° and 10° – 50° respectively.

All presented within a black and burgundy leather over timber, blue velvet and cream silk lined travel case, snap closure on a button release.

Condition: All instruments the subject of a complete overhaul, the barometer calibrated under laboratory conditions, the movement working well with easily acceptable levels of accuracy across the standard barometric range. Some losses to the case.

The compass swings well, finding north easily, the lock working correctly, the case retaining virtually all its lacquered finish.

The thermometer with unbroken thread and working correctly. The case structurally sound with some losses, the fabric interior aged though retaining much of its original colour and vibrancy.

Comments: These travelling compendia are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially in this condition. Most definitely a collector’s piece.
