Negretti & Zambra barometer with fine, stepped brass dial, the outer delicately engraved having a range of 22.1–31 inches of mercury, numerically divided to 1/10ths of an inch. The centre upper portion marked “Stormy,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” and “Very Dry,” and signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London,” and no. “750.” The lower portion with semi-circular mercurial thermometer calibrated -10– 135 degrees Fahrenheit, and marked “Inst. Makers To Her Majesty.”

Fine, blued-steel pointer, rotating bezel with index spur set beneath bevelled glass, knurled bezel ring. Conventional single 2½” capsule-driven first quality movement constructed in brass and set on a steel chassis. “C” spring & bi-metallic compensation. Contained within a formed and spun case having top-mounted suspension ring and pillar, the verso with compensation port set at 3 o’clock.

The case retaining a good proportion of its original lacquered finish, areas of oxidation to the parallel. The dial in near-perfect condition, the movement sensitive with good progression. Serviced, calibrated and conserved.

Well within the first thousand aneroid barometers constructed by this world-renowned London maker, this instrument must be regarded as of great historical importance. It is an early aneroid altimeter, with the range of inches of mercury corresponding to around 0-8000 feet in height, probably used for mountaineering or surveying as the range is rather limited for ballooning.

With wonderful aesthetics, functionality and great rarity, this is absolutely a fine collector’s piece.
