Ross aneroid barometer with finely engraved and silvered brass dial calibrated from 27.4–31.6 inches of mercury, marked “Compensated” and signed by the maker “Ross Ltd, London.” Index ring set within a rotating bezel and calibrated, clockwise, 0–1,000ft and, anti-clockwise, 0–2,000ft. Fine blued-steel pointer set beneath bevelled glass. First quality movement constructed in lacquered brass on a steel chassis driven by 2½” capsule, bi-metallic temperature compensation. The massive case verso engraved boldy “Presented by the members of the Anti-Aircraft Squad of the Special Constabulary “V” Division, Wimbledon to Edward Hay Greenfield Esq. (Lieut: R.G.A.), formerly the Inspector of the Squad, Christmas 1918.” Suspension ring with pillar, compensation screw set at 3 o’clock.
Wonderful open and uncluttered perfect dial, visually fine, and a statement of finest quality. Surviving in exceptional original condition, the case retaining most original lacquered finish with slight oxidation and some wear. This is a real piece of history, a top quality instrument and witness to the very first attempts at anti-aircraft warfare…
Aesthetically, wonderfully pleasing, this is a scarce instrument and unique as a presentation of historical, military and aviation significance.
Serviced, calibrated and conserved. Absolutely a collector’s piece.
