Negretti & Zambra Forecasting Aneroid No 9437 Performance Chart

A good scarce “Forecasting Aneroid” barometer by Negretti & Zambra No 9437 in original travel case c1925

Aneroid barometer having 3¾” silvered and die struck dial, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28” – 31” divided down to 1/20th. Fine blued steel pointer under bevelled glass. Rotating bezel with needle index.

The conventional 1st quality Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 1¾” nickel alloy capsule. All contained within a substantial brass drum form case, the side wall with altitude scale calibrated in feet from 0 – 3,000ft, the verso with side index and calibration port. Locking crown.

Presented in its original rare maroon leather over timber blue velvet and purple silk lined case, snap closure on a button release.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test.

The dial crisp and clear with little signs of ageing, the brass case retaining most original lacquered finish, minor marks and points of oxidation. Both bezel and verso rotating smoothly easily. The locking crown operating correctly.

The leather travel case in good external condition, the leather almost unmarked, structurally sound, locking catch releasing and engaging correctly. The fabric interior with some fading, and discolouration to lid silk.

Comments: These instruments are scarce – normally supplied in a larger pigskin case with brass forecaster, this is the first such I have seen supplied alone in its bespoke leather travel case. Overall condition is crisp.

Made to special order in small numbers, the Forecasting Aneroid is the iconic partner to the well known Weather Watch, and a truly wonderful commentary on early C20th Britain. A treasure.
