French Tourist Pocket Barometer Compendium c1900 – SOLD
Antique pocket barometer compendium, the barometer having die struck 1¾” open silvered dial with barometric range from 21 to 31 inches of mercury, the upper portion marked with standard meteorological wording “Rain, Change, Fair.” Fine blued steel pointer set below a beveled crystal retained within a rotating bezel carrying altimetric scale from 0 – 10,000 feet. Conventional 1” diameter single capsule driven first quality continental style lacquered brass and steel movement tensioned on a C-spring.
The compass having diamond-form needle, jewelled suspension, the dark bronze lacquered rose engraved with cardinals and intercardinals, the silvered azimuth marked to 360 degrees in single degrees, with stations at ten degree intervals. The thermometer set on an engraved brass register wth a scale in Fahrenheit from 20 – 140 degrees.
All three instruments set within a brass mounting plate, and contained within the original leather over wood, satin lined case, snap closure on a button release.
Mounting plate and thermometer register retaining traces of original finish and silvering respectively, the pocket barometer and compass silvered dials in good condition, showing some signs of ageing, minor losses to compass azimuth, the compass glass with minor chip. Both instruments in good working order. The leather case in good condition with some wear to edges, minor marks, abrasions and minor indentations, the lining replaced.
Serviced, calibrated and conserved, a desirable collector’s piece.
