A very rare fine Georgian long necked hand bearing silver compass by Peter Dollond, London, in case by Thomas Harper, c1786

Georgian Silver Compass by Dollond c1786 – SOLD

Image of Dollond Silver Compass c1786Georgian silver compass with 2″ enamelled quadrant scale card displaying 32-wind compass rose and bar needle with jewelled suspension. Fine English silver case hallmarked within the rear cover with assay marks for London, silversmith’s mark to Thomas Harper, and date letter ‘l‘ for 1786. Typical arrestor mechanism in brass and actuated via a small sliding extension to case top.

Well figured articulating Georgian bow with ‘long neck’ extension, plain back inscribed “Dollond, London” and monogrammed to side “WJ,” contained within its original extremely rare cream silk-lined, red Moroccan leather over wood case with twin hooks and keeper closure.

A truly beautiful object, very minor marks to crystal and silver case, the bar easily finds north and the transit lock works perfectly. The original leather covered case with some losses, the hinge remains perfectly viable though a little loose. The cream silk interior, though mostly present, is perished.

Overall a very fine instrument in much above average condition. Very much a collector’s piece.
