Pocket barometer having 1¾” engraved and silvered dial calibrated from 22 to 32 inches of mercury, outer rotating altitude scale with a range of -2000ft to 8,000ft, the upper portion annotated “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” with “Compensated” and “1st Quality” below. Fine blued-steel pointer set below a bevelled glass retained in rotating bezel. Barrel-form case with suspension ring, compensation screw to rear at 7 o’clock. Conventional lacquered gilt brass first quality movement with bimetallic compensation driven by a 1¼” capsule. The whole contained within its original green velvet and silk -lined black Moroccan leather over wood case with button release.

An interesting instrument – those marked “1st Quality” are scarce. The altitude ring carries an unusual scale, calibrated to effectively display negative altitude, for example that which may be encountered in mining or caving. The dial with a very minor mark at centre and only discernable with very close inspection in critical light, some minor marks to case exterior otherwise in truly exceptional and original condition. The leather case with signs of wear. This may have been re-covered at some time, but it would in any event appear to be ‘old’ work. Fully serviced and checked, shows good sensitivity and progression.

Scarce in this condition. As an example of instruments from this period, a very worthwhile addition to any collection.
