Gilt Brass Pocket Compass by Ross c1880 – SOLD
Antique pocket compass having 1¾” silvered and engraved brass quadrant dial with cardinals and inter cardinals, signed by the maker “Ross, London,” bar needle with jeweled suspension, bevelled glass, decorated compass rose. Transit lock and suspension ring. Gilt brass case of conventional pocket watch form. All contained within its original burgundy Moroccan leather over wood, dark navy blue velvet and cream silk case. Inner lid with maker’s cartouche in gold block. Button closure.
The gilt brass case retaining virtually all its original lacquer colour, the dial with minor age marks, the glass with a few, almost invisible, scratch marks. Leather case with some marks and abrasions, with good colour and shine, crisp overall. Compass quickly and easily finds North. Locking mechanism works perfectly.
Compasses of this type, age and condition are seldom seen. This one has survived in remarkably good order and represents one of the better commercially-available compasses of the day.
