A very good aneroid pocket barometer altimeter by James J. Hicks, London No 10089 in original travel case c1910

Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and die struck dial, the outer altimetric scale calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 10,000ft divided to 100ft and 50ft, inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 21” – 31” divided to 1/10”, standard meteorological terms, marked “Compensated” and signed “J. Hicks, Maker, London” and serial no. “10089.” Fine blued steel pointer under bevelled glass.

Standard Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 1” nickel alloy soldered capsule and tensioned on a C spring. All contained within a semi barrel form lacquered brass case, engine turned finishers, pendant and bow, calibration port to verso.

Presented with its original clam shell burgundy over leather, cream silk and blue velvet lined case, the lid top marked with initials “A.M.C.B.”, snap closure on a button release.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working acceptably well across the normal range, with good sensitivity and progression.

The barometer dial about very good, slight evidence of ageing, the brass case retaining much original lacquered finish, some losses to barrel sides and at 12 and 6 o’clock. The travel case structurally sound with good external colour, some discolouration, the fabric interior aged and marked but with good colour and vibrancy.

Comments: A very nice example of these hard to find instruments by Hicks, acknowledged as a top maker in London. This instrument, being very original and in good condition, would add to any collection or make the perfect gift.
