An attractive and unusually small Francis Barker shallow hunter cased compass c1890

Antique hunter cased pocket compass with 1″ silvered dial featuring decorated centre, cardinals and intercardinals, north marked in red, and outer ring marked 0°-360°, divided to 2°. Polished steel bar needle suspended on a jewelled bearing under a low dome crystal with bevelled edge, retained by a brass bezel with lid activated transit lock. Oxidised brass shallow hunter case, lacquered brass suspension ring and button.

The compass in full working order and exceptional condition, finding north easily, the transit lock functioning correctly. The case retaining its original oxidised finish, with just a few small marks commensurate with age and use.

The inner lid carries initials Y.J.L. & S. These would appear to be those of a retailer but we’ve not yet been able to confirm this.

A very attractive and unusually small example of this scarce pocket compass from the preeminent British maker, Francis Barker. 

This lovely compass would make a wonderful gift not only for those interested in history or Victorian innovation, but as a lasting symbol of guidance and direction.
