A very good lacquered brass chart table aneroid barometer by Casella for Stanley c1881

Aneroid barometer having 5¾” stepped silvered and engraved dial, the outer barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 26” – 31” divided down to 1/100”, inner altimetric scale calibrated in feet with a range from 0ft – 4,000ft divided to 100ft on Professor Airey’s scale. The inset marked with standard meteorological terms, signed by the retailer “Stanley, London,” and marked “Compensated. ” Fine blued steel pointer, bevelled glass, engine turned bezel.

Conventional Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 2¾” nickel alloy capsule, all contained within a drum form case, the verso engraved “John B. O’Donnell” and dated 1881, with calibration port and pull up hanging plate.
 
Presented in its brass bound, mahogany and blue velvet lined deck case, both the lock plate and key struck “Hobbs & Co” and “London,” cut-out housing original loupe with two swing-out lenses.
 
Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working exceptionally well with very good sensitivity and stepless progression.

The dial with signs of ageing, the glass clear, the brass case retaining virtually all its original finish.

The glued joints to the deck case had broken down and at some point it had been re-bonded with silicone. The carcase therefore has undergone restoration and conservation using traditional materials. The case retains much original finish, the fabric interior remaining original, bright and crisp. The lock stripped and overhauled.
 
Comments: Chart table instruments are unusual, and this larger size distinctly difficult to find. Although the dial is marked Stanley, it is very likely that the instrument was made by Casella – this is absolutely consistent with its accuracy, sensitivity and execution.
