An exceptional, oxidised brass, drum-form aneroid barometer, having 4¼” silvered and engraved dial with barometric range of 28” to 31” of mercury. The upper portion annotated with standard meteorological terms “Rain,” “Change” and “Fair,” signed by the maker below “L. Casella, 147 Holborn Bars, London” with serial no. “8887,” the lower portion marked “Compensated.”

Fine blued-steel pointer, rotating bezel with point index, bevelled glass. First quality 2″ single capsule movement mainly constructed in grained and lacquered brass, screw adjusters to finely cut and milled primary lever, delicately set cross shaft with fine adjustment, bimetallic temperature compensation. Lever lightly annotated with date referring to 1902. Contained within a substantial drum-form case, suspension ring and post, compensation port with screw-down dust cover to rear and set at 3 o’clock.

The whole contained within its original black Moroccan leather-over-wood and aubergine velvet-lined case, button closure. The case with some losses to leather-covered lid, the keeper replaced with localised small repair to leather and case structure.

This instrument has survived in almost ‘as new’ condition, and a note hand-written in ink found in the case may explain why. It points to a reading error of 2 4/10th of an inch – a significant deviation – so it may well have been that the owner simply put it to one side! This error was corrected in our workshop by simple recalibration and servicing, and on test the instrument now performs with an error of  +/- 100th of an inch over the range 28 – 30 inches, a quite outstanding result.

With its expansive dial, precise engraving, fine pointer and substantial case, this is a truly wonderful piece, the work of one of the world’s best makers and complete in its rare original box (most don’t survive), this is absolutely a collector’s lot.
