A very good lacquered brass aneroid pocket barometer by Negretti & Zambra no. 12585 c1933
Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and die struck dial, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28” – 31” divided to 1/20”, the upper part marked “Compensated,” the lower signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London,” and serial number “12585.” Fine tapered blued steel pointer, bezel set barb index, bevelled glass.
The standard Vidie pattern movement, marked “1 33” (Jan 1933), driven from a single 1” nickel alloy soldered capsule, tensioned on a C spring. All contained within a lacquered brass semi barrel form case having engine turned finishers, calibration port to verso, pendant and bow.
Presented in its original burgundy leather over timber, green silk and velvet lined case, “Negretti & Zambra” logogram to inner lid. Snap closure on a button release.
Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working exceptionally well with good sensitivity and smooth progression.
The barometer dial about perfect, unmarked, clean and vibrant. The lacquered case retaining virtually all its original finish, very minor marks and losses only. The travel case with repair to release button, otherwise with excellent colour and good condition externally, the fabric interior with some wear especially to logogram, otherwise with good colour saturation and vibrancy.
Comments: Produced by Negretti & Zambra when they were making particularly good instruments, designed specifically as a meteorological instrument with the standard 28” – 31” Hg range. A good very functional instrument.
This pattern is certainly not rare, but in this condition very hard to find and as an example probably not easily beaten. A collector’s piece.
