The pocket barometer altimeter with 1½” silvered and die struck dial, the upper part marked “Compensated” together with standard meteorological terms “Rain,” “Change” and “Fair.” Barometric scale with a range from 23 – 31 inches of mercury, the outer rotating altimetric scale with a range from 0 – 8,000 feet. Blued steel pointer all set beneath bevelled glass. Standard movement driven by a single ¾” capsule. Barrel form case, the verso with calibration adjustment port, extension post and suspension ring.

Lid mounted compass with finely set polished steel bar needle, the reflector ring marked in the manner of Francis Barker and having twin scales, the outer with cardinals and inter-cardinals, the inner (as viewed from inside the case) marked in 90 degree quadrants with stations set at 10 degrees, further divided to 5 degrees.

The whole contained within its leather over wood and green velvet circular case, snap closure on a button release.

This is a good quality item. The bar needle to the compass mounted within fine cups set to the centre of a twin element magnifier, enabling a bearing to be superimposed upon a chart or map. The magnifier, of good optical design and quality, facilitates the reading of fine details or even lighting fires! Unusually, the compass has two diametrically opposed scales which may be read separately from the outside of the case or the inside. The outside scale and overall design is very reminiscent of work by Francis Barker and the undoubted quality of this item might well suggest Barker as indeed the maker.

Overall in very crisp condition and good working order, the leather covered case with loss of material to the inside of the lid around the compass, small repair to area around catch, the button replaced. A very hard to find item in very collectable condition.
