Nickel Brass Pocket Barometer Altimeter Compass Compendium c1880 – SOLD
Pocket barometer compendium having engraved and silvered 1¾” dial, the upper portion marked with standard meteorological terms, “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” the lower portion marked “Compensated,” outer rotating altitude ring having a scale in feet set from 0 – 10,000, barometric scale set to inches of mercury with a range from 21 – 31. Fine blued steel pointer. Conventional pattern single 1¼” capsule driven lacquered brass movement by Negretti & Zambra.
Three piece drum form case with ribbed detail, knurled compass and barometer bezels, suspension ring, calibration port accessed with compass detached. Detachable magnetic compass maintained on a screw thread, mother of pearl card marked “Singer’s Patent,” cardinals and intercardinals, lyre motif to north, jewelled suspension, transit lock.
The whole contained within its original oxblood grained leather over wood green silk and velvet lined double case. Snap closure on twin button release.
A really good example of these now increasingly hard to find compendiums, an instrument of obvious high quality and unusual in having a plated finish. The barometer altimeter with good sensitivity and progression, working well; the compass swinging freely, easily finding north.
Retaining much of its original plated finish, the compass card with a small mark/loss to blackened sector, the crystals with minor abrasions, the post and suspension ring later replacements, the leather case with minor losses and abrasions but with good colour and integrity, the fabric lining sound.
An unusual and very attractive item, very collectable.
