Image of Explorers Barometer c1880Aneroid barometer having 4″ silvered die-struck dial with twin scales, the inner calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 25 – 31, and divided to 1/100ths. The outer altitude scale calibrated in feet having a range from 0  – 6,000 ft finely divided to 10ft. The upper dial marked “Compensated,” the lower part marked with retailer’s signature, “James W. Queen & Co, Philadelphia.” Fine blued steel pointer, rotating bezel with index. First quality early C-spring biased movement constructed upon a deep early pattern 2¼” capsule, substantial drum form case.

The whole housed within its very unusual turned mahogany and purple velvet lined case, having hinged circular open-centred lid with snap closure and button release. The circumference with three leather suspension strap loops.

This is certainly an explorer’s instrument, civil rather than military, and quite possibly the former poperty of a geographer or prospector. The instrument is, in itself,  not particulaly unusual, though its condition sets it well ahead of most. The case, though, is extremely unusual: constructed professionally from turned mahogany and bespoke for the instrument, this together with the inclusion of leather loops affixed to the circumference with brass screws clearly point to an outward bound application. An instrument in a configuration likely to have been travelled by horse or on foot.

The instrument in overall good condition, with very good sensitivity and stepless progression. Some abrasions and marks to the glass, the lacquered finish to the case with some losses, discolouration. The mahogany case with some minor marks, the opening frame to the top with some warping and cracking, evidence of repair also to the main body rim. Generally sound with good colour.

In all, this is a fascinating artefact bearing testament to the dawn of a new age and the rapid expansion of a new nation. A wonderful thing.
