A good quality lacquered brass antique aneroid pocket barometer altimeter by Thomas Armstrong & Brother, Manchester & Liverpool, No 267, c1900


Pocket barometer having engraved and silvered 1¾” dial calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 23-31, outer altimeter scale from 0–8,000 feet, the upper portion marked “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” the lower portion with maker’s particulars, signed “Thos Armstrong & Bro,” “Manchester & Liverpool,” and serial no. “267.” Blued-steel pointer, rotating bezel with altitude scale, bevelled glass. Barrel-form spun case, calibration port to rear set at 7 o’clock degrees. Post with suspension ring. Contained within its original green silk and velvet-lined leather covered circular case.

In good overall condition, retaining much original lacquered finish, the dial with some losses to numerals, the case the subject of some restoration, including the leather to its circumference and the opening button. The top and bottom of the case showing obvious signs of handling and use. The instrument with good sensitivity and transition, serviced, cleaned and calibrated.

Thomas Armstrong & Brother is recorded in Banfield, Edwin, Barometer Makers & Retailers 1660-1900, as working in Manchester and Liverpool from 1875 onwards.
