Pocket Barometer Altimeter with Inset Compass by Callaghan c1870 – SOLD
Pocket barometer with engraved and silvered 1¾” dial calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 24–31 inches, the upper portion marked “Rain,” “Fair,” signed by the maker “Callaghan & Co, 23a New Bond St, London,” the lower portion with inset 3/8” diameter magnetic compass, floating card printed with compass rose, brass pointer, rotating bezel with altitude ring calibrated 0–6,000 feet. Heavy spun case with compensation port to rear set at 7 o’clock. Suspension ring and post. The whole contained within its original circular green silk and velvet lined black and oxblood coloured Moroccan leather covered case.
A gem, rare and very attractive, a had-to-have 19th century gadget! It will be noted that the pointer is brass instead of the usual steel, preventing influence to the compass. The brass case retaining much original gilt finish, some losses to circumference and suspension ring. The leather case with replaced opening button and small area of surrounding leather, some fading to silk interior, otherwise in good sound condition.
Serviced and calibrated, and of superb Callaghan quality, this is a wonderful early pocket barometer which is very rarely seen. It is presented in original and extremely collectable condition.
