Pocket Barometer Thermometer Compass Compendium by Negretti & Zambra c1906 – SOLD
Pocket barometer having 1¾” inch silvered and engraved dial with a range from 23–31 inches of mercury, altitude scale from 0–8,000 feet, the upper portion marked “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” the lower portion with retailer’s particulars, “Benn Franks, Opticians, Hull, Hanley, Etc.” Blued steel pointer. Bevelled glass set within a rotating bezel carrying the altitude scale. Calibration port to rear set at 7 0’clock, and suspension ring. Conventional single capsule movement by Negretti & Zambra marked “11/06.” Contained within its original maroon velvet and material lined moroccan oxblood and blackened leather covered case, compartment to inner lid housing a mercurial thermometer set on an ivory backplate, calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit, the outer lid having inset compass with bar pointer and cardinal points.
Compendia of this pattern are considered scarce. This one remains in very good working condition having been the subject of a complete inspection and service. The compass is sensitive and easily finds north, the thermometer thread is unbroken. The leather case has been cleaned and the subject of some minor restoration, the opening button replaced.
Subject to the notes above, this pocket barometer and accessories remain in original condition in all other respects. A very good collectable item becoming increasingly difficult to find.
