Pocket barometer compendium having 1½” die struck and silvered dial with barometric range 24 – 31 inches of mercury, outer rotating altitude ring with a range from 0 – 7,000 feet the upper dial with standard meteorological terms “Rain,”Change,” “Fair,” the lower portion with retailer’s name “A & J. Bell, Leeds.” Blued steel pointer set below a low iron bevelled glass. Conventional 1″ single capsule driven movement, low barrel form case with rear rotation of case affording compensation, extension with suspension loop.

The whole contained within its original circular leather over wood, imperial purple velvet lined case, the lid with large port housing a full-width bar needle compass glazed to top and bottom, the top glass with stylised handpainted cardinals and intercardinals. Snap closure on a button release.

A rare item, probably the work of several makers: certainly the barometer movement was produced by Negretti & Zambra and is clearly dated 26th January 1914; the compass remains unattributed. The brass case retaining virtually all its original finish, some losses to the bow, the compass with some losses to the “W” and north cardinals, generally with small dust particles, the leather case with minor losses and abrasions. Overall condition is crisp and original, the barometer working well with good sensitivity and progression, the removable compass swings freely, easily finding north. The leather case remaining sound with good colour.

Very much a collector’s piece, and particularly attractive since both instruments may be read at once, the barometer visible through the compass.
