Antique pocket barometer with 1⅝” silvered and engraved twin-scale dial, the outer altitude scale with a range from -1,000ft to +2,000ft, the inner calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28–31, the upper portion marked “Rain,” “Fair,” “Compensated” and serial no. “1905,” the lower portion with the retailer’s name “H. Daniels, London.” Fine blued steel pointer set beneath a bevelled glass maintained within a rotating bezel with associated altitude scale. Conventional compensated 1¼” capsule-driven movement.

All contained within a finely rose engine turned, drum form silver plated case with extension and suspension loop. The verso with central blank cartouche and adjustment screw. Together with its leather over wood, navy blue velvet and silk lined case. Snap closure on a button release.

The pocket barometer rose engine turned German silver case and bevelled glass in very good condition with only very light marks, the dial with minor ageing. The leather case with losses and abrasions, mainly to bottom, the button original but lacking leather. The velvet vibrant, the lid silk with fading.

German silver, perfected in Birmingham in the 1830s, was the new wonder metal, comprising copper, zinc and nickel. The choice of German silver rather than Sterling silver might reflect a rising public interest in new materials, technology and metallurgy. German silver is also much harder than silver and so might be the better choice for such fine engine turned decoration.

A very attractive instrument in much above average condition. Serviced and calibrated, the pocket barometer functions very well with good progression and sensitivity.

Crisp original condition overall – a good quality piece.
