Image of Dollond 1st Quality Pocket BarometerPocket barometer having 1¾” engraved and silvered dial calibrated from 28 to 31 inches of mercury, outer rotating altitude scale with a range of 0 – 3,000ft, the upper portion annotated “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” with “Compensated” and “1st Quality. ” Lower part marked with the maker “Dollond, London.” Fine blued-steel pointer set below a bevelled glass retained in crown-driven rotating bezel. Barrel-form oxidised brass case with suspension ring, compensation screw to rear at 8 o’clock. Conventional lacquered gilt brass first quality movement with bimetallic compensation driven by a 1¼” capsule. The whole contained within its original green velvet and silk -lined burgundy moroccan leather over wood clam-shell case with button release.

An interesting instrument, those marked “1st Quality” are scarce. The silvered dial with very minor marks at centre, some minor marks to oxidised brass case exterior, otherwise in truly exceptional and original condition. The leather case in excellent condition, the leather over the button remaining in place.

Fully serviced and checked, this pocket barometer shows good sensitivity and progression.

Scarce in this condition. As an example of instruments from this period, a very worthwhile addition to any collection.
