Surveying Aneroid Pocket Barometer by Hicks No 10605 c1910 – SOLD
Pocket barometer having engraved and silvered combined stepped 1¾” dial, the inner with calibrations in inches of mercury, with a range from 25–31 inches. The upper dial centre marked “Surveying Aneroid” and “Compensated,” the lower section marked “Keep the Eye level with point of Needle” and signed by the maker, “J. Hicks, Maker, London,” with serial no. “10605.” Blued steel pointer, bevelled glass, deep rotating bezel with outer dial annotated “1000 [feet] up,” “1000 down,” fine scale marked in 100s of feet to plus and minus 1000.
Plain form gilt brass and lacquered brass case with suspension post and loop, compensation to rear set at 8 o’clock. First quality, single capsule, lacquered brass and steel movement. Blued-steel hairspring and set screws. Offset cock and bimetallic temperature compensation. The whole contained within its original navy velvet and champagne silk lined circular Moroccan leather over wood case.
The case retaining most of its original gilt brass and lacquered brass finish, losses to loop and bezel. The leather case in very good condition, the leather replaced over the button and snap catch, the linings intact. Serviced and calibrated, this pocket barometer is working well and highly desirable.
