Antique Pocket Barometer Altimeter by Short & Mason c1920 – SOLD
Pocket barometer with 1¾” engraved and silvered dial having a mercurial scale from 23– 31 inches, outer altitude scale from 0–8,000 feet, the upper portion marked “Compensated for temperature,” “No G26629,” the lower portion with retailer’s particulars, “Heath & Stoneman, Plymouth.” Blued-steel pointer, bevelled glass, rotating bezel carrying altitude scale, barrel form case, with extension post and ring, calibration port to rear set at 8 o’clock. Contained within its contemporary green silk and velvet lined oxblood moroccan leather over wood covered case.
The work of Short & Mason, this is a good example of these instruments of contemporary manufacture. The dial is interestingly marked with a serial number suffixed with “G” – it is unclear the likely designation of the instrument, however it is plausible that this might have been military procurement since both the Royal Navy and Royal Marines had a significant presence in Plymouth, as indeed they do today.
The instrument in very good and original condition, some losses to lacquer on case sides, the wood and leather case in excellent condition. Crisp overall with good function, serviced and calibrated.
In very collectable condition, this pocket barometer altimeter would make an ideal gift.
