Pocket Barometer by Short & Mason c1930 – SOLD
Pocket barometer having 2” engraved and silvered dial calibrated from 21 – 31 inches of mercury, outer rotating altitude scale with a range from 0 – 10,000’, the upper portion marked with “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” with “Compensated” below. Fine blued-steel pointer set below a bevelled glass retained in rotating bezel. Barrel form case with suspension ring, compensation screw to rear at 7 o’clock degrees. Conventional lacquered gilt, good quality movement with bi-metallic compensation driven by a 1¼” capsule. The whole contained within its original green velvet and silk-lined burgundy Moroccan leather over wood case with button release.
Though unsigned this pocket barometer is undoubtedly the work of Short & Mason and produced at a time when the quality of their work was at its best. The dial with minor mark at 12 o’clock, otherwise in truly exceptional and original condition. As an example of instruments from this period a very worthwhile addition to any collection. Scarce in this condition.
