Image of Georgian Travel Compass Thermometer Compendium c1790Circular ivory register calibrated in the Reamur and Fahrenheit scales with ranges -20 -40 degrees and 120 – 130 degrees  respectively, additionally marked “Blood Heat,” “Sumr Heat,” “Temperate” and “Freezing.” Substantial curved mercury thermometer with large teardrop reservoir. The centrally mounted 1″ compass with blued steel needle marked “N” and “S”, the enamel dial with cardinals and intercardinals, delicately executed compass rose to centre. Compass contained within a carved circular border. Ivory register with hanging point at 12 o’clock.

The whole contained within its original flat profile circular moroccan leather over timber, velvet and cream silk lined case. Twin swinging catch closure.

These compendia from this period in this condition must viewed as rare. The overall condition is crisp with no visible cracks to the ivory register, the compass finding north easily, the thermometer thread remaining unbroken. The lid silk a later replacement.

A wonderful Georgian accessory.
