Comyns Silver Fronted Desk Barometer Performance Chart

A very good nickel plated pocket barometer presented in a silver fronted strut case by William Comyns & Sons c1901

Pocket barometer having 1¾” transfer printed enamel dial, the barometric range from 26” – 31” of mercury divided to 1/10th, the inner part with standard meteorological terms, the lower part marked “Made in London.” Blued steel pointer under bevelled glass, fine bezel driven index.

Conventional Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 1¼” nickel alloy cell tensioned on a C spring. All contained within a semi barrel form bright-plated case, pendant and bow, calibration port to verso.

Presented in its original silver mounted and green silk and velvet lined strut case, snap closure on a button release. The silver front with hallmarks “W.C” for the silversmith William Comyns & Sons and date letter “f” for 1901.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions. The barometer working very well and easily accurate enough across the standard meteorological range 28” -31” inches of mercury, resolution remaining good down to 26” Hg, see performance chart from dynamic test.

The enamel dial without cracks or defects, the bright-plated case with minimal signs of wear and retaining virtually all its original finish. Minor impression / scratch at 8 o’clock position to outside curve.

The strut case the subject of some restoration, the silver front in excellent condition with a very small amount of distortion to the top front, the leather covering to rear with two repair patches. The fabric interior with good vibrancy and colour. The hinged fold-out strut and closure all in good condition. The strut ribbon replaced.

Comments: Just a really nice thing – not rare but quite unusual in this condition as most have damage or faults. The movement unsigned but probably by Negretti & Zambra.

Lovely for a desk or side table, lending a mixture of good aesthetics and practical value. A very thoughtful gift.

William Comyns is one of the oldest and most prestigious silversmiths, tracing its history back to the 17th century and still crafting fine silverware today.
