Silver pocket barometer having 1⅝” die struck silvered dial calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 26–31, divided to 20ths with stations on the inch. The upper part with standard meteorological terms “Stormy, Rain, Change, Fair, Set Fair” and signed by the maker “Callaghan & Co” in ghosted style, the lower part detailing the business address “23a New Bond Street, corner Conduit St, London.” Blued steel pointer set beneath a bevelled glass maintained in a rotating bezel with fine index. Conventional later pattern 1″ capsule driven movement with fine adjustment to cross shaft, the chassis plate struck with Callaghan serial no “8058.”

Contained within a barrel form silver hallmarked case by Albert Thomas Oliver (“ATO”) having London assay marks and date letter “i” (1903), engine turned detail to circumference. The verso inscribed in script “Madge from Jacob, Feb 11th 1907,” calibration port. Case extension bearing maker’s mark “CH” (Charles Hill), silver assay marks for London and date letter “g” (1902). The pinned bow struck with assay mark for London.

All contained within its original fine red leather over timber, blue velvet and silk lined case with gold block initials “M.H.” to top, maker’s crowned Royal Warrant “Callaghan London” logogram to inner lid silk in gold block. Snap closure on button release.

Serviced and conserved, this is a glorious instrument from one of the very top makers.
