Silver pocket barometer with finely engraved and silvered 2” dial signed “J. Hicks, Maker,” “London,” no. “7702” and “Compensated,” having twin scales representing 0-15000 feet and 18-31 inches of mercury. Fine blued-steel pointer, rotating bezel with fine index marker, bevelled crystal. First quality, single capsule, lacquered brass and steel movement. Blued-steel hairspring and set screws. Offset cock and bimetallic temperature compensation.
Fine silver, open dial case with hallmarks “ATO” for Albert Thomas Oliver, date letter “k” for 1905, and “London.” Pillar with pinned suspension loop having hallmark date letter “e” for 1900. Contained within its original cream silk and deep blue velvet lined, maroon Moroccan leather covered case.
This instrument represents the best in terms of quality of making, the provision of a fine English silver case setting it aside from the great majority. Clearly little used and remaining in very fine original condition, with the original leather case in exceptionally fine condition. The use of two different date letters is not unusual – cases and parts are often assayed in different batches.
This silver pocket barometer is a wonderful example of this great maker’s work, serviced, inspected and in good working order.
Albert Thomas Oliver was a silversmith working in Clerkenwell, London, and specialising in gold and silver watch cases, from 1903 onwards, continuing the business of Richard James Oliver.
