Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and engraved dial with barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 23 – 31, divided to 1/20^th” increments, the upper part annotated “Rain, Change, Fair,” the lower part signed “T.B. Winter, Newcastle on Tyne.” Blued steel pointer, the rotating bezel with fine index and heavy bevelled crystal. 1” capsule driven conventional movement tensioned on a C spring, marked with serial “No. 2365.”

Drum form case with centrally spaced engine turned circumferential panel, case extension and suspension ring. The engine turned verso having central cartouche, bearing full English hallmarks for Benjamin Alfred Green and 1874, the extension post similarly dated 1874. Calibration port. All contained within its original leather over wood, green velvet and silk lined travel case.

Condition: This very attractive instrument in good condition, the silver case verso with some signs of age and wear, the dial bright and vibrant with some minor marks, the bezel rotates easily. The barometer the subject of full servicing and calibration under laboratory conditions, showing good stepless progression and very acceptable levels of accuracy, see performance chart. The travel case in very crisp condition, the exterior retaining much original gloss finish, with a few light marks to the verso, the silk and velvet linings bright with just a few signs of age.

Comments: This is an unusual and very handsome early instrument with good aesthetic appeal, nicely hallmarked and well presented. Very much a collector’s piece.
