Rare Singer's Patent Night Compass No 12588 c1865 – SOLD
Antique Singer’s Patent Night Compass having 3⅛” floating dry card with Singer’s Patent rose, showing lyre and star trademark and serial no. “12588,” further marked with cardinals and intercardinals, suspended on a red gemstone bearing. The card verso balanced with sealing wax. Contained within a drum-form case with push-on lid, flat glass with sprung retainer. Label to inner lid marked “Singer’s Patent Night Compass” and with directions for use.
Rolled case with small area of separation at seam, retaining traces of original lacquer, card with signs of aging. The compass swings nicely, easily finding north.
A very good example of an unusually large diameter compass, surviving in much above average and original condition, the numbered dial very rare and desirable. Although unsigned, the compass is almost certainly by Francis Barker. Increasingly hard to find in this size, this Singer’s Patent Night Compass is a real collector’s piece.
