Pocket barometer having 2” silvered and engraved dial calibrated in inches of mercury with a range 21–31, the upper portion marked “Compensated,” the lower signed by the maker “Troughton & Simms, London” with serial “No 1172.” Outer altitude scale calibrated in feet from 0–10,000 feet. Fine blued-steel pointer set beneath a bevelled glass retained in a rotating bezel. Drum-formed case with suspension ring and compensation port with adjustment at 4 o’clock degrees. The 1¼” capsule driving a transitional movement based on conventional design. The whole contained within its original blue velvet and cream silk-lined brown Moroccan leather over wood case, the cream silk lining with maker’s gold block cartouche bearing their address, “138 Fleet Street, London.” Button release.

A scarce instrument from this well-respected maker in very much above average condition, minor marks to dial, the case retaining virtually all its original gilt lacquer finish. The leather case in very good sound condition with general handling wear, the bottom re-covered. An early instrument, the movement with transitional features, the primary lever a left-over from the earlier coil spring design, in this instance replaced by the new pattern “C” spring. Sensitive with good progression, serviced and checked. A collector’s piece.
