Chadburn’s Wall Barometer Performance Chart

A very good well-carved mahogany cased aneroid wall barometer retailed by Chadburn’s, Liverpool c1880

Aneroid wall barometer having 6¼” silvered and die struck dial, the upper part with semi circular barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28” – 31” divided to 1/50th, standard meteorological terms, the lower part with semi circular thermometer, the register calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit with a range from 10° –  130° divided to 1°. Signed by the retailer “Chadburn’s, 47 Castle St, Liverpool,” the centre with floral enhanced octogram. Blued steel pointer, lacquered brass index, bevelled glass.

The traditional Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 2¾” nickel alloy capsule tensioned on a C spring. Presented in a carved mahogany case decorated with foliate scrolls, calibration port to verso.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, the movement working well with good sensitivity and progression, see performance chart.

The dial in very good condition, bright and clear some signs of oxidation at periphery. The thermometer with unbroken thread reading accuracy to within 1°. The bezel and index re-lacquered, the glass replaced. The timber case appearing essentially damage free with excellent colour and definition.

Comments: Certainly a very good quality instrument – wall barometers of this period generally were of lesser quality. The most attractive dial is nicely presented within a very competently carved case of good detail and pleasing colour.

Lending presence and focus to any room, a most decorative and practical instrument.
