Weather station comprising aneroid barometer, alcohol thermometer and storm glass. The barometer calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28 – 31 with fan-shaped, silvered and engraved dial pierced with three viewing apertures, the left upper revealing lower pressure 28 – 29 and marked “Rain,” the lower middle revealing medium pressure 29 – 30 and marked “Change,” the upper right revealing higher pressure 30 – 31 and marked “Fair.” The lower part signed by the maker “Chadburns Ltd, Liverpool.” Index adjustment wheel to centre, blued steel pointer with red index, chrome plated bezel. Conventional single 2” capsule driven lacquered brass and steel movement.

Red alcohol thermometer to lefthand side set to a silvered register, having a range from 30 – 120 degrees Fahrenheit and marked “Blood Heat, Sum.r (Summer) Heat, Temperate, Freezing.” Storm glass to righthand side set to a silvered register marked “Rain, Change, Fair.” All contained within and affixed to a burr walnut veneer Art Deco styled mount. The verso with calibration port and top-sited hanging plate.

Art Deco, perhaps the most instantly recognisable of the many fashionable styles with its bold clean convergent lines, here manifest in what had become in its time a must have item. Weather stations, for most, were aspirational with generally much higher retail prices than standard aneroid type barometers – instruments of this type and work of a top maker represented amongst the best that could be found. This instrument is as interesting today for its statement as it is for its 1930s style. It is aesthetically compelling.

The subject of some restoration including the registers, the dial and its chrome surround, the thermometer a replacement. The barometer fully serviced, calibrated and working well.

This is an identity piece, an item that conveys style with function, and something that would add to and enliven any interior decoration.
