Antique Pocket Barometer & Compass Compendium c1895 – SOLD

IImage of French Silver Pocket Barometer Compendium c1895Pocket barometer compass compendium having 1½” die struck and silvered stepped dial, the inner calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 21 – 31, the upper portion marked with standard meteorological terms “Rain,” “Change” and “Fair.” The outer rotating scale calibrated in feet, activated at the crown with altitude scale from 0 – 10,000ft. Fine blued steel pointer set beneath a low convex crystal. Typical French rack-type movement driven by a 1″ capsule.

The verso with off-set compass also set beneath a low convex crystal, having diamond-form needle, jewelled suspension, the frosted silvered rose with cardinals and intercardinals, the azimuth set to a contrasting flat silvered finish and marked to 360 degrees with stations at 10 and 20 degree intervals.

The whole contained within a drum form case with concave and ribbed bezels, engraved with the initials “STJ.”

A very unusual and most attractive instrument, certainly of French manufacture and probably by Maxant. The case lacks hallmarks, so is most likely silver-plated but may be silver.

Disassembled, cleaned and calibrated, the barometer/altimeter functions well, the  attitude ring turned by rotating the crown and the compass finds north easily. This is a really unusual and attractive pocket barometer compendium.
