A good large early Victorian mahogany cased travel compass c1845

Large mahogany-cased travel compass having 2¾” paper dial, quadrant rose displaying cardinals, intercardinals and false points, fleur de lys indicating north, decorated letters for cardinals. Flat blued needle marked ’N’ and ’S’ in gold on brass pivot. Original flat glass held in brass bezel. The mahogany case with champfered edges to sides of lid, rectangular brass hinges, transit lock, and twin swinging catches. The verso marked “DM/JWM” and “J.W. Hughes, Rochdale” in pencil.

Condition: In good condition, the blued needle swinging freely, finding north albeit slowly, the transit lock working correctly. The paper dial with signs of ageing, the glass with a few very slight radial marks at 4 o’clock, otherwise good. The mahogany travel case in good sound condition.

Comments: An unusually large and good example in original condition.
