A good small Georgian mahogany cased pocket compass c1835
Small mahogany-cased pocket compass having 1⅝” paper dial, quadrant rose displaying cardinals and intercardinals, fleur de lys indicating north. Flat blued needle marked ’N’ and ’S’ in gold on brass crown pivot. Original flat glass held in brass bezel. The mahogany case with straight edges, diamond shaped brass hinges, transit lock, and swinging catch.
Condition: In above average condition, the bright blued needle swinging freely, finding north easily, the transit lock working correctly. The paper dial in very good condition, the glass with a few very slight small marks, only visible in certain light. The mahogany travel case in good sound condition.
Comments: A very good example in lovely original condition, from the late Georgian or very early Victorian period.
