Pocket Barometer Thermometer Compass Compendium Retailed by Newton & Co No 1082 c1875

Image of Newton Pocket Barometer Compendium No 1082 in open case with compass and thermometer on leftAneroid pocket barometer having 1⅞” silvered and engraved dial, outer bezel set altitude scale calibrated +/- 1,000ft, divided to 10ft increments, inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 24- 31, divided to 10ths”. The upper part marked “Surveying Aneroid, Compensated,” the lower with retailer’s particulars “Newton & Co, 3 Fleet Street, Temple Bar, London,” and serial no. “1082.” Fine blued steel pointer set beneath a bevelled crystal. Quality 1″ capsule driven movement, tensioned on a C spring, all contained within a low drum form lacquered brass case, extension post and suspension ring, the verso with calibration port.

The bar needle compass with jewelled suspension, enamel card with cardinal and intercardinal points, compass lock. Circular thermometer with teardrop reservoir, the register calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit and Centigrade with scales 20 – 130 & -10 – 50 respectively.

All contained within the original dark red leather over timber blue velvet lined case, snap closure on a button release.

Condition: A scarce item in very crisp condition from a very good maker. The leather case worthy of comment for its particularly clean condition, the release button retaining its leather cover which is almost always worn away with relatively little use. The thermometer register similarly without cracks or losses – mostly these are affected by shrinkage cracks and discolouration. The thermometer without breaks in the thread, and working well. The lacquered finish to the barometer with minor losses. The compass easily finds north, the lock with effective function.

The subject of a full re-build and calibration under laboratory conditions, the barometer registers more than acceptable performance for accuracy with high sensitivity and stepless progression.

Comments: This is really quite a rare combination, the pocket barometer on one side, the combined thermometer and compass to the other. The pocket barometer was made by Elliott Brothers, one of the top manufacturers of such instruments – Elliott used the same movement and drum form case in its own pocket surveying barometers. Here, the pocket barometer has been combined, by Newton & Co, one of the oldest makers of scientific instruments in the world, with a quality thermometer and a most attractive bar needle compass.

This pocket barometer compendium is a real collector’s piece.
