The pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered die struck dial, the upper portion marked with standard meteorological terms “Rain,” “Change” and “Fair,” and “Compensated,” the lower signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London” with serial no “8403” and the “N&Z” logogram. Rotating outer altitude ring operated from the crown calibrated 0–15,000ft, the inner scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 18–31. Blued steel pointer set beneath a fine bevelled glass. The good quality lacquered brass movement driven by a 1¼” capsule driven movement of conventional pattern with bimetallic compensation to extension. The primary lever marked “11,19.” Low barrel form case with central rib, suspension ring with pillar and crown, compensation port to verso.

The matching compass having Singers pattern mother of pearl floating card marked with cardinals and intercardinals, jewelled suspension, the lower part signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London.” Suspension ring set to post with integral crown compass lock.

Substantial thermometer set in a bone enclosure, the register with both Celsius and Fahrenheit scales with ranges 0 to 50 degrees and 30 to 120 degrees respectively. Signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London.”

The whole contained within its original leather over wood green velvet and silk lined case, the outer lid marked with a crown over the letter N. Snap closure on a button release.

The pocket barometer and compass have been cleaned and serviced and retain virtually all original finish. The barometer dial clean and crisp, the compass card shows minor losses. The leather over timber travel case in generally good condition, having minor abrasions and some small losses to the leather exterior, the case interior retaining virtually all its original colour and vibrancy.

The pocket barometer has good sensitivity and function, the compass finds north easily, the lock operating correctly. The thermometer thread unbroken, working and in generally good condition.

These compendia are not uncommon – this version, in this condition and by this premier maker, is scarce. It is a little more practical than most, the thermometer with its much more open scale easier to read. Certainly collectable.
